How Assessments Work

Progression at BHSC is earned, not rushed.
Swimmers only move stages when all required outcomes are consistently demonstrated, ensuring confidence, safety, and long-term success in the water.

At Borough of Harrow Swimming Club (BHSC), assessments are a key part of our Learn to Swim programme. They ensure every swimmer progresses safely, confidently, and with the correct technical foundations.

Progression is based on demonstrated ability, not time spent in a class.

When Assessments Take Place

  • Swimmers are assessed during the term as part of normal lessons

  • There is no separate assessment session

  • Teachers observe skills over multiple weeks, not on a single day

This approach ensures that outcomes are performed consistently and confidently, not just once.

What We Assess

Each swimmer is assessed against the specific outcomes for their current stage within the BHSC Learn to Swim pathway.

Depending on the stage, this includes:

  • Water confidence and independence

  • Body position, balance, and streamlining

  • Breathing control and coordination

  • Push & glide skills

  • Stroke technique and control

  • Endurance and consistency

All required outcomes for a stage must be met before progression is recommended.

How Progression Decisions Are Made

Progression is recommended only when:

  • All stage outcomes are consistently achieved

  • Skills are demonstrated with control, confidence, and correct technique

  • The swimmer can perform skills independently and repeatedly

If some outcomes are not yet secure, swimmers will remain in their current stage to allow time for consolidation. This ensures long-term success and avoids gaps in skill development.

Assessment Reports for Parents

At the end of the assessment period, parents receive a written assessment report via the Parent Portal.

The report includes:

  • Current stage

  • Outcomes achieved

  • Areas still requiring consolidation

  • Clear recommendation:

    • Remain in current stage, or

    • Progress to the next stage or class

This feedback is designed to be clear, transparent, and informative, so parents understand both progress made and next steps.

Why Progression May Not Happen Every Term

It is normal for swimmers to spend more than one term in a stage.

This may be because:

  • Technical skills need further refinement

  • Confidence or consistency is still developing

  • Endurance requirements are not yet met

Remaining in a stage is not a setback — it is often the fastest way to build strong, confident swimmers and prevent future technical difficulties.

Moving Between Classes or Pathways

When a swimmer is ready:

  • Progression is based on assessment outcomes, not age

  • Class moves are made to ensure the swimmer is placed in the most appropriate learning environment

  • Swimmers showing strong ability and commitment may be identified for:

    • Pre-Squad transition

    • Future competitive pathways, where appropriate

All movements are guided by technical readiness and long-term development.

Our Assessment Philosophy

  • Safety and confidence come first

  • Quality technique over speed of progression

  • Consistency over one-off performance

  • Clear communication with parents

Our goal is to develop swimmers who are capable, confident, and prepared for the next stage — whether that is recreational swimming or competitive pathways.
