The BHSC Learn to Swim Programme follows a clear, structured 8-stage pathway, designed to develop confident, competent, and technically sound swimmers.
Children are placed into classes by ability rather than age, ensuring appropriate challenge, progression, and safety at every level. Each stage has defined technical outcomes that must be consistently demonstrated before a swimmer progresses.
Our stages progress through:
Water confidence and independent movement
Body position, balance, and breathing control
Push & glide, propulsion, and coordination
Stroke development across front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly foundations
Endurance, efficiency, and skill consistency
All swimmers are formally assessed during the term against stage-specific criteria
Progression is based on skill mastery, not time spent in a stage
Parents receive clear written feedback, outlining:
Outcomes achieved
Areas still requiring consolidation
Recommended next stage or class
The programme provides a strong technical foundation for:
Confident recreational swimming
School swimming competence
Progression into Pre-Squad and competitive swimming pathways, where appropriate
Our focus is on quality movement, confidence, and long-term development, not rushed progression.
